Freelancer tax set-aside calculator for the EU: how much to save each month

The money in your account is not all yours. Pick your country, enter a typical month and see how much to move into a separate savings account so VAT and tax bills never surprise you.

Are you registered for VAT?

Progressive scale with a top rate of 47.5%. Enter the average rate you expect to pay on your profit (your accountant can tell you). Social security and health contributions are separate and not included.

A planning aid, not tax, legal or accounting advice. Your figures are calculated in your browser. If you enter your e-mail to see the results, we store it together with the figures you entered.

How it is calculated

  • VAT to pay = VAT you charge (revenue × share on which you charge VAT × rate) − VAT you can reclaim on costs.
  • Income tax = profit (revenue − costs) × your income-tax rate; contributions = profit × your contribution rate.
  • Rates come from public data (checked October 2026) and are starting points. Replace them with the figures your accountant gives you.
  • Revenue and costs are entered net of VAT.

Do this automatically in Frusma

Frusma shows your VAT periods with due dates, a yearly income-tax estimate and the monthly amount to set aside, from your real invoices and expenses.

Questions

Why do I have to set money aside for VAT?

When you charge VAT you collect it for the tax authority, so it is never your income. You pay in the difference between VAT charged and VAT you can reclaim, usually every month or quarter.

What does “share on which I charge VAT” mean?

Sales to private clients and businesses in your own country carry VAT. Sales to VAT-registered businesses in other EU countries (reverse charge) and to clients outside the EU do not, so lower the share if you have many.

Are the tax rates correct for me?

They are typical starting points: flat taxes where a country has one, top rates or a placeholder where taxes are progressive. Your real rate depends on your income, deductions and regime, so confirm it with your accountant.

Does this include social security and health insurance?

Only if you enter a contribution rate. Rules differ a lot between countries; use the field for the share of profit your contributions take.
